Assistant Director of Academic Advising for Athletics (Finance)

Position Summary:

The Assistant Director of Academic Advising for Athletics reports to and works closely with the Associate Director of Academic Advising for Athletics to lead, organize, and implement all aspects of academic advising for student-athletes. S/he assists student-athletes in exploring and identifying their educational goals and developing academic plans while maintaining compliance with Rice University, NCAA, and the American Athletic Conference rules and regulations. The Assistant Director advises student-athletes through one-on-one meetings and as a team of academic advisors. The Assistant Director assists with the Athlete Peer Academic Advisor Program, Orientation Week programming, and other advising programs and events. S/he provides input to the Associate Director of Academic Advising for Athletics with strategic planning, staffing decisions, budgetary responsibilities, and representation on various committees and work groups as requested. The Assistant Director creates and/or participates in the development of compliance reports, financial and administrative reports, and other reports relevant to Academic Advising for Athletics. The Assistant Director for Athletics may act on behalf of the Associate Director as requested.

Ideal Candidate Statement:

The ideal candidate will have direct experience in academic advising for Division I student athletes and a strong understanding of NCAA academic eligibility requirements. The role requires experience implementing programming, including new student-athlete orientation and peer academic advising. A demonstrated ability to build collaborative relationships with athletic department staff, coaches, faculty, and other campus departments is essential. Experience using advising systems (e.g., Banner, Navigate, Degree Works) is ideal, along with excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.

Workplace Requirements: This position is exclusively on-site, necessitating all duties to be performed in person at Bixby Academic Center (M-F, 9-5). Some weekends and evening work are also required. Per Rice policy 440 , work arrangements may be subject to change.

Hiring Range: $60,000 - $62,000 annually, contingent upon experience and qualifications.

*Exempt (salaried) positions under FLSA are not eligible for overtime.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • 2+ years of experience in academic advising for athletics

Skills:
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; excellent interpersonal and organizational skills; independence and initiative; proactive attitude towards students
  • Ability to interact and collaborate with staff and faculty leaders, gain the trust and confidence of students, and train students for positions of leadership
  • Diplomacy, patience, and tact necessary to successfully address a wide range of interactions with administrators, faculty, staff, students, parents, and community members
  • Ability to handle routine interruptions by students and others seeking assistance

Preferences:
  • Master's degree
  • Experience in academic advising, mentoring, tutoring, and/or instructional experience at a Division I university
  • Early alert intervention, program assessment
  • Experience utilizing education technology platforms such as Navigate, Banner, Degree Works, Canvas, Slate
  • Experience with Rice University faculty, staff, students, and collaborative offices or an understanding of a residential, liberal arts college

Essential Functions:
  • Assists with assigned advising committee through letter writing, data collection, and assessment
  • Advises undergraduate students across a wide variety of interests and needs
  • Assists with preparation and delivery of Orientation Week programming
  • Prepares and provides presentations for administrators, faculty advisors, collaborative offices, and students during Orientation Week and throughout the academic year
  • Research and reports on current best and progressive practices for general and specialized areas of academic advising
  • Assists with creating and distributing academic advising resources including information from peer schools, national associations, Rice academic departments, and collaborative offices
  • Advises students through individual appointments and centralized and residential college information sessions
  • Performs all other duties as assigned

Additional Functions:
  • Serve as the athletic advisor for designated athletic teams, maintaining ongoing communication with coaching staff regarding student-athlete progress and eligibility
  • Monitor academic performance and eligibility to ensure compliance with NCAA and university policies
  • Support early alert efforts and academic interventions for at-risk student-athletes
  • Lead the planning, training, and supervising the Athlete Peer Academic Advisor Program
  • Partner with the Associate Director on strategic planning, assessment, and policy development related to student-athlete advising
  • Represent the advising team on departmental and university-wide committees related to athletics, advising, and student success
  • Provide advising during peak periods, orientation events, and other key academic programs
  • Serve as a delegate for the Associate Director as needed
