Assistant/Associate/Full Professor, Blood Bank/Hemotherapy - Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, McGovern Medical School (Finance)



McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston , a leading academic health center, invites applications for a full-time (1.0 FTE), clinical track faculty position in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the rank of Assistant Professor/Associate Professor/Professor.

We are looking for a team-oriented Clinical Pathologist to join our group. Our affiliated hospital, Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center , is expanding its services, providing a variety of medical conditions/challenges and opportunities for career growth for candidates with the ability and skills to build relationships across units and clinical teams.

Position Key Accountabilities:

This position has two components: blood banking/apheresis and hemotherapy.

Blood Banking is part of the transfusion medicine service that provides blood banking and apheresis coverage at the Memorial Hermann Hospital- Texas Medical Center for a broad array of medical and surgical clinical services, including a Level I trauma center, the heart & vascular institute and transplant services, as well as the UT Physicians Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center. The physician in this role is expected to participate in trainee education at various levels as well as clinical research and laboratory improvement projects in pursuit of academic excellence.

Hemotherapy is the second aspect of this position. The hemotherapy service is an innovative clinical consultative service that serves as a bridge to clinical and laboratory medicine. It is part of a multidisciplinary care team that operates 24/7 and serves as interventional blood banking/coagulation consultants at the bedside. The primary goal of the hemotherapy service is to mitigate the bleeding risks of critically ill inpatients with cardiovascular disease, including those with advanced cardiovascular devices, those who have undergone recent surgical interventions, and those with inherited and acquired bleeding disorders. Physicians covering the hemotherapy service must be comfortable with direct patient care and are expected to appropriately order and interpret routine and specialized hematology and coagulation assays. Additionally, they will be responsible for ordering blood product transfusions and hemostatic agents.

Qualifications:

  • Texas Medical License or be eligible for a Texas Faculty Temporary License (M.D. or D.O.).
  • Completion of Clinical Pathology (CP) or Anatomic and Clinical Pathology (AP/CP)
  • Residency with board certification in CP or AP/CP by the American Board of Pathology
  • Fellowship training in Transfusion Medicine/Blood Banking, certified or eligible for Transfusion Medicine/Blood Banking subspecialty.
