Job Description
Primary Function of Position

The successful candidate will architect the user interface and define the behaviors of the Da Vinci SP surgical robot system. The engineer will design, implement, debug and verify the high level system state machine. The engineer should be comfortable designing and implementing complex hierarchical statecharts using UML modeling tools. The engineer should also be capable of writing and maintaining portions of the embedded C/C++ code that interface with the state machine. The successful candidate must excel in a high-energy team environment, be able to drive to solutions from rough requirements, and have a commitment to high product quality. The engineer will report to the Director of SP Software Engineering.

Essential Job Duties

  • Work on a cross-functional team to architect and implement new user interface features in a complex, distributed, hierarchical state machine
  • Collaborate with designers of robotic control algorithms to define the behaviors of the robotic system
  • Develop and maintain external interfaces between state machine and embedded host environment in C/C++
  • Perform formal risk analysis and develop and verify software mitigations
  • Document software requirements, specifications and verification protocols according to Intuitive software development guidelines
Qualifications
Required Skills and Experience
  • At least 3 years experience with commercial embedded software development
  • Experience designing complex Statecharts using UML modeling tools
  • Strong ability to identify with the customer experience and design elegant User Interfaces which enhance that experience
  • Strong inter-disciplinary understanding (e.g. familiarity with electrical and mechanical principles of sensor and control signal processing)
  • Experience in developing embedded software in C/C++
  • Hands-on engineering experience with proven ability to work well in a team environment
  • Demonstrated experience in and comfortable with all phases of the product development lifecycle including design, implementation, debug, verification, validation, and transfer to Manufacturing
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills

Required Education and Training
  • Bachelors in Software, Electrical, Mechanical or Computer Engineering; Masters preferred

Preferred Skills and Experience
  • Experience with QNX is a plus
  • Experience with embedded Linux development is a plus
  • Experience with Python for diagnostic/test automation is a plus
  • Experience with version control tools like SVN, Git is a plus
  • Experience with designing software products in an FDA or other regulated industry is a plus

We provide market-competitive compensation packages, inclusive of base pay, incentives, benefits, and equity. It would not be typical for someone to be hired at the top end of range for the role, as actual pay will be determined based on several factors, including experience, skills, and qualifications. The target salary ranges are listed.

Base Salary Range Region 1: $149,200 USD - $214,800 USD
Base Salary Range Region 2: $126,900 USD - $182,500 USD
